The Space In Between Reaffirms the Fight for Happiness

Examining the themes of the new visual novel

I never understood how one could make a constellation without literally creating a shape. As someone who was a connect-the-dot person, I still don’t get it. A shape is a shape. Yet constellations reassure people, as they look to the stars to make sense of the images in the sky.

Steam recommended The Space In Between as a dating simulator which also talks about mental health and the fragile connections that we have to our heritage. I was skeptical since the last dating simulator I had seen involved Colonel Sanders as a bishounen cook. ( A friend was streaming it, long story short, and they were having fun with it. So were we viewers, once we got over the first reaction of “What?!”) Then I started playing, laughing a little at the weird humor, and felt many emotions.

June and Miles have become a serious couple. A few years into college semesters, they’ve gone from talking about memes or obscure rock bands, depending on your choices, to meeting each other’s families. At the least, they’ve met some family members who approve of their relationship. They decide to go out stargazing, at a point where June hasn’t been in ages.

Miles admits that he doesn’t know what the real constellations are. He says that he would spend his nights looking at the stars and making up shapes. June suggests that it would be a fun way to spend the time, to look at the stars and find out what images they can see.

The game itself is free and pretty short in terms of playing time. There are no save points, something which I found out the hard way when trying to break this up between two streams, so you have to play it in one go. Officially it’s listed as 45 minutes gameplay, while my stream was about an hour give or take when factoring in the lags. I do hope a future patch adds a save point for those of us that need to take a break from time to time.
