Set an Emotional Tone for Harmony in Your Home

Choose your mindset for a happier family

She was twenty minutes into yelling and pounding on things in her room in anger. My 5-year-old did not want to eat one more bite of dinner to get dessert — she just wanted dessert!

Things escalated quickly to the point I had to put her in her room and hold the door shut so she couldn’t break anything in other rooms of the house.

Certain tips I’d received over the years were running through my mind. Things such as “when a child is acting the least lovable is when they need the most love” and “don’t escalate when they escalate” or “he who loses it, loses.” All solid advice.

But it didn’t stop the anger I had from welling up inside me. I was angry things were getting like this…again.

I had two choices, and luckily I chose to remain calm until emotions subsided rather than escalate in anger with her and say things to her I’d regret.

I’ve noticed over the years, that the emotions I project as a parent are critical to keeping a home as happy as it can be. I learned that if I was agitated, it didn’t take long for the kids and even my wife to be agitated.

If I was happy or my wife was happy, we were generally all happy.

The following mindsets can help you set a tone of peace and harmony.

Of course, none of these are magic bullets of contentment, but they can help make things the best they can be at that time in your family dynamics.
