When Feeling Envious Became Toxic

When our mind is constantly obsessed with the feeling of envy, what can we do to drain this toxic emotion out of our system?

Last week, I started reading the book named “I Decided to Live as Me” by Korean author Soo-Hyun Kim. I read the translated English version by Ma. Kristina Carla Rico and Kyung-min Bae.

Currently, I’m 30 pages in and enjoying the book. It talks about self-respect which I lack sometimes. This book’s goal is for us (ordinary people) —

This is where it triggers me to further my thinking on being envious.

Some people can be envious of someone they see in real life or on TV. They can be envious of what that someone has (fame, money, love, a luxurious car, a grand house, or anything you name it).

For me, it’s easy not to be envious of others and for their “something” that I never had before. But, if I had a taste of “something” (i.e. I had that “something” before and now I no longer have it), then I can’t help but be envious of my old self.

In any case, this feeling of envy is a good thing if we can use it as our motivation and work our way in order to achieve it. But, if we’re just going to plainly feel envious and do nothing in order to achieve it, this becomes a toxic feeling over time.

The more we compare ourselves with others, the more we will find out what they have and what we don’t have. Not every person on earth can have everything exactly the same as one another.
