A Prayer to Embrace The Power of My Skin

Strike a match, burn some incense, sage, or light a candle to this prayer for Women of Color to find the power in their skin.

Dear God,

I ask that you watch over the power in my skin,
let no man, dark, light or in between drain me of your blessing.
I ask that you protect me from the hate that will come from
both within and outside of those who don’t understand,
nations have sprung forth from my womb
and created kings, queens, tribes and even Presidents.

Remind man that slaves came from me
and that slaves have built empires.

Remind women that we hold no competition
as we are all equal in the eyes of each other
but never in the eyes of men.

Please, God, I pray that you don’t harden my heart to your children
believing it is not my place to heal, help, and assist,
believing I am not a black savior — help me realize the power in my skin,
that, because of it’s melanin, darker than night or lighter than the sun,
can bring about the change that man is to simple to see —

THERE IS A GREATER ENEMY THAN WHITE SKIN OR LIGHT EYES,

it’s name is superiority — or, as in your written word, it is called Pride,
which comes right before destruction.
So, finally, I pray that you guide me with the wisdom to be proud,
without pride,
to help those who have wronged me,
without falling to the blades of cynicism when they wrong me again,
and to open my heart to accept the blessing of my skin
and all of its power
dark, light, and all the shades in between.

Amen
