Kenya as an Aerospace Hub

The Rift Valley holds a great deal of promise for aerospace ventures.

Through the sifting savannah winds lie an obvious, yet surprisingly little discussed treasure. Here on equatorial lands more commonly envisioned as wildlife preserves, lies the key to not only securing Kenya’s position as an industrial powerhouse, but also the possibility of creating an advanced aerospace sector.

Creating an industrial hub will prove to be advantageous in several ways. The first of course will be expanding the position that scientific research and development has, given that agriculture currently holds the majority of the nations employed. Increasing the number of individuals linked to high tech operations will facilitate the transition into an advanced economy.

Kenya already has a head start in telecom and fin-tech in comparison to its African counterparts. The advent of services like M-Pesa resulted in an explosion in the number of people both using mobile devices, and those linked to the internet. In turn, this lead to fundamental transformations within the domestic economy. The multiplier effect from aerospace could be even greater.

Given that Kenya is located directly on the equator, this makes it ideally situated for space launches. Taking advantage of the accelerated rotation of the Earth on the equator allows for quicker launches, and Kenya’s vast untouched northern frontier could function as the home for space exploration.
