Recovery Thinking

Addiction is a disorder that affects how a person processes information and approaches problems. Therefore, understanding addictive thinking patterns is essential in addiction recovery, both for the addict and those supporting them, recognizing these thought patterns and knowing how to manage them. For example, an addict often has thoughts about fearing exposure or getting caught. Fearful thoughts often repeat in a continuous loop, whether it’s the discovery of the addiction itself or illicit behaviors surrounding it. Impulsivity also seems to be a familiar thinking pattern among addicts.

Such addiction thinking might seem insane to others, but to the alcoholic or drug addict, it makes sense. The addicted person creates an alternate reality to make sense of their world and to counter what’s perceived as an attack from others who’re pleading or demanding the person give up the alcohol. Denial helps the addict feel justified. The more the addict thinks they have a right to use drugs and alcohol, the stronger the addiction grows. When addictive thinking is present, the euphoric effects outweigh the harmful consequences of using drugs and alcohol.

A troubling aspect of alcohol or drug addiction is that it can mean your thoughts are working against your recovery. Distorted thinking can make the unacceptable appear acceptable, and the absurd seem plausible. During recovery, identifying and eliminating unhelpful patterns of thought must occur. Since genuine happiness and positivity are contagious, being surrounded by other positive people encourages adopting similar behaviors and attitudes. Critical thinking is of great help to those who are recovering from an addiction, which is true in early recovery when the individual is on an emotional rollercoaster.

To overcome distorted thinking, one acknowledges the beliefs and opinions that cause problems. While in early recovery, review your life. Get feedback. Keep an open mind. As it says in Narcotics Anonymous, “My best thinking got me here.” One-to-one therapy is an effective method for identifying distorted thinking. To live intentionally, you need to focus on the body’s physical needs, on living in the now, and most importantly, on goal setting — additionally, kindness, empathy, and gratitude play a role in your overall success.

Whatever we think about, says the Law of Attraction, we get more to think about. It’s as if our thoughts and the energy behind them signal the universe saying, “I’d like another helping, please.” Suppose we want to attract more positive, joyful. To live intentionally, you focus on the body’s physical needs, on living in the now, and most importantly, on the importance of goal setting — additionally, kindness, empathy, and gratitude play a part in your overall success.

A recovery recommendation: pick music with uplifting beats, powerful lyrics, and an accelerated tempo for better positive productivity and thoughts. Create Artwork. Whether you are coloring, doodling, carving, drawing, painting, sculpting, etc., creating artwork will help restructure your thinking and gain insight into how you think and feel at that moment.
