My Journey into Software Engineering

I have been told before that life is a winding journey with every turn throwing a new curveball at you. Sometimes these curveballs can be a negative experience, many times they are not. Regardless of the circumstances, it can seem like an arduous journey. I feel like I never truly grasped the impact of that statement but low and behold I have embarked on a journey to become a software engineer.

As a science major during undergrad, I always felt like computers are just a convenient way of studying. I never felt the need to explore the intricacies of my laptop and felt that knowing how to use my computer was pretty much enough. I finished my degree in Biology only to realize that I have no marketable skill set. I was very good at understanding and reproducing scientific facts but that isn’t necessarily the most marketable skill. This was my first professional curveball. I pivoted my career choices and decided to pursue a Masters and MBA from my University’s business school.

While in the midst of my career change I saw an opportunity unfold for me; a business opportunity. My father and his other physician friends were complaining about the current locum tenens model and how they are so frustrated with the tediousness of applying to locum opportunities. Locums are temporary placements for doctors in underserved hospitals that will pay top dollar to a physician willing to fill in for a short period of time. With my newfound entrepreneurial spirit, I found that the process could be automated using technology and I figured that it is time for me to take a plunge into this business opportunity. This is how I learned about Software Engineering.

I never assumed I would enjoy learning about coding. I started off spending some time in front of my computer trying to learn the lingo, figuring out what needs to be done to develop my app and start my business. Never would I have foreshadowed that I was nearing my next curveball, a curveball I am happy life throw my way. Diving deeper into learning about coding and familiarizing myself with stacks, I was hooked. I found that I was growing to appreciate the field and that it was a perfect medium to display my ideas and creativity to a worldwide audience. Coding could allow me to reach anyone in the world and that is a beautiful thing.

As my company grew and I finished my formal education, I was left with a paper and no passion for my field. I wanted to be a software engineer and I had no way of learning how to sort all the masses of information available to me. Here comes General Assembly and with their help, I can proudly say that I have the skillset to do what I am truly passionate about. I am excited to build apps and websites and to make my ideas come to life. All of this was an experience for me to learn and I am so happy with the curveballs that lead me to become a software engineer.
