How Juuling gave me Pneumonia

During her Senior year of High School Colorado Springs resident Emma Chappalar came down with a serious case of Pneumonia. She thought it was a simple cold at first however, when she finally realized she could barely breath she went straight to the hospital. There, she was diagnosed with an extreme level of Pneumonia and she soon discovered the cause of her illness was her Juul addiction. Chappalar had been Juuling for about 2 years straight at this point and her doctors said that this played a large role in her pneumonia. Recent stories of teenagers being diagnosed with severe lung illness due to Juuling has brought these memories up for Chappalar and she is grateful to have quit Juuling when she did.

Interview with now University of North Carolina Student, Emma Chappalear (21)

Beyond the Oval: At what age did you first hear about a Juul and how did you begin to use one?

Chappalar: I was about 16 years old when I had first discovered what a Juul was. I was at a small party at my friend Victoria’s house when one of my other friends brought her older brothers Juul to the party. I tried it for the first time there and immediately loved it.

Did you decide to purchase a Juul after this?

About a week after the party I had my older sister buy a Juul for me because I was still not eighteen this was when my addiction began.

How often did you use your Juul?

Did many of your friends at this age also have a Juul?

Yes, after I purchased mine many of friends went out and bought as well. It appears our entire generation began Juuling at the same time. And we all became addicted together.

Did your parents ever catch you with the Juul or notice anything?

Did you notice your Juul addiction having a certain effect on your body?

Yes, very much so. At the time, I was playing soccer for our high school, I noticed that I began having a lot of trouble breathing during every game and practice. I knew that this was because of the Juul but I did not care. My addiction was too important to me, more than soccer was.

When did you start getting sick?

I got sick towards the end of my first semester of senior year of high school at this point I had been Juuling for quite some time. However, I thought I just had a cold and didn’t think the Juul had any contribution to this.

When did you start to get worse and what did you notice?

It was about a week later and I felt terrible. I could barely breathe and had the worse cough I had ever had. I began coughing up liquid as well and having no energy this is when my mom forced me to go to the doctor.

What was the doctor’s results and how did you know the Juul played a role in your illness?

Before any tests were taken the doctor asked if I smoked. I looked at him and said no and my mom intervened. She told him that I used a Juul and she knows that I had been for a long time. He later proceeded with my results of having pneumonia. He said my Juuling addiction played a large role in causing my sickness and urged me to stop forever.

What did you change after this experience?

After this happened I decided I needed to quit Juuling if I wanted to stay healthy and be able to breathe. I could not damage my body anymore.

These stories have made me realize how grateful I am for my mom and for quitting the Juul. I have empathy for these kids and there families and I encourage other teens to stop Juuling. Juuls should be banned all together. They are very dangerous.
