You should ask what Facebook knows about you

Every Facebook user can access and download all the data related to the account. It goes from who you are to everything you share, from what you like to what you might like. Facebook aims to create detailed profiles which enable adequate ad targeting.

Facebook builds your ad profile based on your categorized interests. It targets the companies and the brand you fancy, your hobbies and activities, the food you enjoy, the sports you follow, etc. All the data comes from your profile as well as your past experiences on Facebook. If you clicked a lot of ads related to Winter Sports, you are more likely to be into skiing and you will probably see some ad about French Alpes resort discounts popping. Likewise, downloading an app like Tinder will make “Dating” one of your interest. The more detailed and precise your profile will be, the more likely Facebook will display adequate ads.

The social media also records information such as your phone age or the frequency you go abroad, you’ll have the right ad at the right time. Being “close friends of women with a birthday in 7–30 days” and “friends with soccer fans” (as written in my Facebook data), I am likely to be targeted with ads related to those specific categories. Meaning my profile depends not only of what I do online but also what my online friends do. The company create interests’ correlation between you and your friends, so if your profile has a lot in common with one of your friends, you will see ads displaying what your friend likes.
