Should I Write a Book

Should I write a book is a question many people ask themselves. But, just as every person is different, each book has its reasons for entering the publishing process.

John Tippets of Texas felt a responsibility to his family that only he could fulfill by writing and publishing a book about his father and mother. This is why we published Hearts of Courage The Gillam plane crash and the amazing true story of survival in the frozen wilderness of Alaska.

John recalls, “A few years ago, I realized that my children and grandchildren knew very little about my parents, Joseph and Alta Tippets. And so a project was started — writing about my parent’s lives, searching out information from extended family and personal memories.

“In the spring of 1940, Joe and Alta were living in Alaska, beginning an exciting new chapter in their lives, which would bring adventure, great joy, and incredible challenges.
In 1943, one of the coldest Januarys on record, my father, Joe, was flying home to Anchorage when the small plane he was in crashed on the side of a snowy mountain in Southeast Alaska.

“Two of the six on the plane lost their lives. One was the famous bush pilot Harold Gillam, who left the survivors’ camp to find help.

“My father was only 29 years old. As the days and weeks came and went, with no sign of the lost plane, friends urged my mother, Alta, to accept that she was a widow and return to family in Utah. She refused. She somehow knew that her husband would be found alive.

“Researching this book took me to many people and places. After publishing Hearts of Courage, I tell the story of my parents to many people and organizations, passing on Joe and Alta’s experience of faith and courage.

“Our family and the world at large have been able to share that experience. This is one of the many wonderful things I’ve learned can happen when you write a book.”
