Circle of life

As a student of the life cycle — focused mostly on death and dying — I have been fascinated by my response to death among the animals on our farm. It’s only natural — say many. And they are only animals, right?

In the past year I have witnessed first-hand the death of a 9 year old 2000 pound Percheron Mare — (Horse). This beauty fell ill early the night before, fought hard, and literally keeled over in front of me. Dead. Gone. Only natural?

She is only one of the many deaths on the farm this year. Another much more mature horse (44 years old!); a duckling; 3 African Crown crane babies, a number of laying hens, a few “peeps” and our beloved Caucasian Shepherd. Circle of life? Only Natural?

Loss comes at us in many different ways, and though my attachment was not the same for each of these creatures, the loss compounded. How do you grieve the loss of a laying hen? The death of an old school horse? the passing of a beloved watch-dog?

The journey goes on. There will be other births and more deaths. Each will add color and dimension. All will shape the texture of my life in some way. Only natural?
