Toast Genie How to Guide

This is a fictional how-to guide written for my freelance writing class.

Congratulations on your purchase! Your Toast Genie will meet all your toasting needs because we designed it with you in mind. Whether you like to smother a couple lightly toasted slices of sourdough with fresh avocado and Himalayan pink salt, or you prefer a darkly toasted hearty brown bread with orange marmalade, Toast Genie has got your shade!

Remove Toast Genie from its box and discard all packaging except this User Guide, which you should frame because we worked really hard on it. Because of our airtight vacuum seal around the Toast Genie, you do not need to clean it before first use. If you won’t sleep tonight unless you clean it first, please see the section in this User Guide called “How to Clean.”

Be sure to remove the plastic protector from the prongs on the Toast Genie’s plug before plugging into a wall outlet.

Place Toast Genie on a non-flammable surface such as a kitchen counter. Be sure to maintain at least 5 inches of space between Toast Genie and other objects.

Do not place any flammable materials such as kitchen towels or your favorite origami swan near Toast Genie.

Toast Genie comes with multiple settings to help you achieve the perfect shade. Simply turn the shade selector dial to 1 for lightly toasted, to 6 for well done toast, or anywhere in between. Go ahead, experiment!

Once you have set the shade selector dial, load one slice of bread in each toasting slot. Your Toast Genie allows you to toast just one slice in case your personal trainer is nearby monitoring your carb intake.

Depress the lever to lower the bread and being toasting. Unlike Aunt Tillly at the open bar, Toast Genie knows when to stop. Based on the shade number you selected, the Toast Genie will heat just long enough to reach that shade, then automatically turn itself off. Your bread will pop up and be ready to eat!

Warning: do not use any device other than your finger tips to remove food from the toaster. Let hot items cool for a few seconds before safely removing.

To remove smaller pieces, lift up on the lever.

Unplug Toast Genie and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Toast Genie’s outer surface of brushed stainless steel resists fingerprints, so do not use cleaning products.

To clean Toast Genie inside the unit, first unplug. Let Toast Genie cool completely. Even a toaster needs a rest! Hold Toast Genie over trash can and reach underneath to find the crumb release knob. Pull down on the knob and let the crumbs fall into the trash can. Give Toast Genie a little shake. Dance moves optional.

Turn Toast Genie upside down over the trash can and give one more shake to release crumbs. Do not attempt to insert cleaning rags or spray cleaning products inside the unit.

Close the crumb release door by pushing up on the crumb release knob until you hear a click.
