A call to action for leaders everywhere

Everyone has a different idea of what success looks like for them, but for me, I can say that by my standards- I have had a successful career thus far.

I have had the privilege of doing some amazing work and learning from some of the best and brightest in my industry. I have had wonderful bosses, co-workers, and fellow colleagues that have my back through thick and thin.

There’s been a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get me to where I’m at today. I’m not underscoring my hard work. But in reflection, I can attribute one very important reason to why I’m here, why I am doing what I’m doing at 28 years old. And it comes down to the fact that I have had people in positions of power give me a chance.

I mentioned in my previous stories a little bit about my background and my career pathway that got me here. I learned a lot of lessons by a process of elimination, prioritization of what’s important to me, and strong mentorship. One important aspect I want to add to that, and it’s really a call to business leaders everywhere- give someone the opportunity to impress you.

My first real big girl job out of college was largely because individuals in leadership gave me a shot. They gave an opportunity, a job, to someone who was green and fresh out of my masters program. They saw all that could be, but wasn’t there quite yet. That is not lost on me. Every day I am reminded of that shot in the dark. Sure I had a solid resume and references, and so it may have been a calculated risk. But I recognize it was still a risk.

Fast forward a few years- my current employer saw my experience, and what future Alexa could be and did the same thing. I am fairly new in my career, they could have easily passed me over for someone with a lot more experience. Again, I was given an opportunity. That’s all I needed.

So, whether you’re the owner of a business, a c-suite employee, or hiring manager- I urge you to ask yourself a simple question:

I am forever grateful for those individuals in positions of power that took a chance on me. From experience I can say that the idea that someone believes in your potential can ignite something very powerful. I have those individuals to thank for my spark.
